2022 Honda Odyssey Review: Performance, Features & Pricing

September 2nd, 2021 by

The Honda Odyssey is a popular and highly regarded minivan with a capacity for seven to eight people. It is available in five models, each introducing higher levels of features to make any trip a joy. Safety is paramount with the Honda Odyssey, just as it should be for a family carrier.

Performance & Fuel Economy

The Honda Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, which is entirely sufficient for the purpose of the vehicle. Fuel is conserved by deactivating three of the cylinders when conditions permit. The 10-speed automatic transmission drives the front wheels smoothly by selecting the right gear every time, and towing capacity is 3,500 pounds.

Its top speed is limited to 111 mph and braking from 70–0 mph is 182 feet.

Unfortunately, the Honda Odyssey is only available with a gas engine, with no hybrid or pure electric option available yet, even though Honda is committed to migration to electric vehicles. It is also front-wheel drive only, but this does not affect performance.

Is the Honda Odyssey 2022 Economical?

The Honda Odyssey is rated at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway by the EPA,** decent mileage for this size of vehicle and engine. It is also similar to the comparative minivans from other manufacturers. Actual fuel economy will differ due to individual driving styles and road conditions.

Standard and Top Features

The standard features of the base Honda Odyssey LX focus on safety. This philosophy is carried over to the other models, where each adds successive safety features to the vehicle. Buyers should consider whether a particular feature is an absolute necessity, as it cannot be optionally added to lower models.

Standard on the EX model and up is Honda’s innovative Magic Slide system for the second-row seats, which allows them to slide both laterally and length-wise to allow for more leg-room or closeness to parents in the front seat.

Pricing

Overall, the 2022 Honda Odyssey is competitively priced against similar minivans from other manufacturers, making the decision based on price alone tricky for buyers. The base LX model already includes plenty of driver assistance features, so the primary difference in trim levels lies in the technology and amenities progressively available with each successive model.

The consensus is that the EX-L model offers the best ratio regarding price to useful features.

2022 Honda Odyssey MSRP Price Chart

Trim Levels MSRP*
2022 Honda Odyssey LX $32,090
2022 Honda Odyssey EX $35,490
2022 Honda Odyssey EX-L $38,760
2022 Honda Odyssey Touring $42,800
2022 Honda Odyssey Elite $47,820

Safety

As a family carrier, safety is always paramount. The 2022 Honda Odyssey offers the highest level of passive and active safety features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rated the Odyssey an overall five out of five stars, with five stars in the frontal and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test.

Some key safety features across all models include:

  • automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • traffic sign recognition

There are also model-specific features, like blind-spot monitoring and front and rear parking sensors.

Technology & Entertainment

The LX, true to being the entry-level model, has a very rudimentary infotainment system compared to the higher models. The screen is small at just five inches diagonally, Bluetooth smartphone integration and only two USB ports, but at least a seven-speaker audio system.

From the EX model onward, the infotainment screen jumps to eight inches in size. With the Touring and Elite models, you gain a rear-seat entertainment system with built-in streaming apps. The system also offers smartphone connectivity through Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wireless device charging and an eleven-speaker stereo.

Parents who need to stay in control will enjoy Honda’s CabinWatch, CabinTalk and CabinControl.

  • CabinWatch displays a video feed of the second and third rows on the screen.
  • CabinTalk turns the stereo into a PA system that allows the driver to speak to the passengers.
  • CabinControl allows the driver to control the rear-seat entertainment system and climate settings.

Interior Comfort & Cargo

With fifteen cup holders, the Odyssey LX seats seven people, whereas all the other models seat eight people in spacious comfort. That means there are two cup holders per person inside the minivan.

All materials used for the interior are premium, top of the line and shouts quality that is easily felt. From the EX-L model and upwards, leather seats are standard.

The cargo space differs in relation to the seating arrangement. The smallest, when all the seats are installed and upright, is 32.8 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded flat, it’s 92.3 cubic feet, and with all seats folded flat and removed, a whopping 158 cubic feet!
